Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless and poisonous gas, produced by incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels.

When carbon monoxide enters the body it prevents the blood from bringing oxygen to the cells, tissues and organs. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it.  But carbon monoxide can kill quickly without warning.

The signs to look out for are – yellow or orange flames rather than blue; soot or staining around an appliance; pilot lights frequently blowing out and increased condensation.

Good maintenance of appliances is essential.

If you think you have been exposed call the national gas emergency service; switch off all appliances and shut off the gas.  Open all doors and windows and if in doubt visit your GP and tell them you may have been exposed.

As an employer, you must protect your workers from the health risks of working with display screen equipment such as PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

These Regulations apply to workers who use DSE daily, for an hour or more at a time.

Employers must:

  • Do a DSE workstation assessment.
  • Reduce the risks making sure employees take regular breaks from DSE work.
  • Provide training and information to employees.
  • Provide a free eye test if workers ask for one, and provide glasses if the employee only needs them for DSE work.

Incorrect use of DSE or poorly designed workstations or work environments can lead to pain in necks, shoulders, backs, arms, wrists and hands. As well as fatigue and eye strain, and the causes may not always be obvious.

One in four people will have a mental health problem at some point.  Mental health is how we feel, think and behave. These health problems can be caused by work related issues.

Employers have a legal duty to help their employees. Work related issues must be assessed and, if a risk is identified, steps must be taken to remove or reduce the cause as far as is reasonably practicable.

The first thing to do as a manager would be to talk to them as soon as you notice a problem.  If they don’t want to talk to you suggest they talk to someone else.

Make reasonable adjustments at work if you can, or refer them to their GP.

If an employee does go off sick, keep in contact with them so they don’t feel isolated, as this could make it worse.
