The Invisible Risks

Health risks do not seem to receive enough attention when it comes to managing the risk. This may be due to the fact that the consequences of exposure to some harmful agents are not often visible.

Symptoms can sometimes be delayed by decades from first exposure and also the deterministic nature of health hazards means that risks can rarely be completely eliminated, just reduced. Every week 100 people die in the UK from construction-related ill-health.

Occupational disease and illness can be prevented, by properly managing and controlling the risks. Health risks do not seem to receive enough attention when it comes to managing the risk. This may be due to the fact that the consequences of exposure to some harmful agents are not often visible. Doing this requires a combined effort from everyone, to recognise the hazards to health, evaluate the degree of exposure and implement effective and reliable control measures.
